Packrafing the Amazon River: Interview with Sergio Rios Rodriguez

We are so excited to welcome Sergio Ríos Rodriguez today! You are going to love hearing about his amazing trip down the Amazon River in a packraft.

(La versión en español se encuentra abajo.)

A few years ago, you took an epic trip down the Amazon River. What can you tell us about your adventure?

Ever since I was very young, I liked to watch National Geographic documentaries, and at the time, most of them were about Africa and the Amazon. I often watched the tribes in their traditional clothing, ants carrying tiny leaves, the caiman alligators, snakes, the gigantic river (largest in the world) surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of jungle. When I was growing up, my father often told me what a great country Brazil and its people were.

As an adult, I spent months packrafting throughout Chile, especially in Patagonia. I wanted to try another type of trip, so I decided to go down the Amazon River in a packraft from the mountains to the sea.

My goal was to travel over 6,000 km of river in an inflatable boat. I started planning the trip, and in one of life’s coincidences, as I was in the Packraft.cl office (my Chilean sponsor), I met Benja Encinas. Benja was a traveler of the Amazon River as well as a fellow packrafter.

We became fast friends and decided to take an exploratory trip over the length of the Amazon River to collect photos and video footage, evaluate the risks, and better plan our trip. We estimated that this could take a little over a year and that it would be a good idea to know what we were up against.

On our trip, we spend 90% of our time in boats and speedboats and 10% of our time in packrafts. We only had 40 days to collect information from 5,000 km of river. Initially, we planned to sail from Iquitos to the Atlantic, but for various reasons, we ended up sailing from Iquitos (in Peru) through Colombia and ended up in Manaus, Brazil.

All along the river, we experienced the Amazon culture to the fullest. We did everything from sharing the packrafts with the tribes to fishing for piranhas in the packrafts to sailing through flooded jungle and rustic Venice-style cities.

Amazon packraft towns

We managed to collect all the information we needed for our project. Before the trip, we thought that the greatest dangers would be the anacondas, alligators, crocodiles, and the indigenous peoples themselves. We had this impression based on what we had seen on TV, but in fact, the river is like a huge highway that connects many towns and cities. It is quite developed and far from being a wild and inhospitable place.

When we discovered the existence of river pirates, drug dealers and human traffickers, we realized that snakes and crocodiles were not our biggest problems. I should point out that this mostly happens in certain parts of the river that we were able to identify thanks to our interviews with the people who live there.

To sum it up, we were able to carry out most of our research and we returned home full of adventures from a very unique experience.

How did you prepare for this adventure?

I spent months sailing around Chile, especially in Patagonia. I paddled through everything I could, including small rivers, large rivers, lakes and the ocean. I have also been mountaineering for years, and I have always loved exploring, so I guess I was preparing myself for years, even though I didn’t realize it at the time. At the end of the day, the most important thing to carry out before making such an epic trip is to plan well and be well prepared to respond to any situation. Then when you are actually out there, everything is easier, and you have a lot of options; it becomes second nature to improvise, and things aren’t left to chance.

Why did you take a packraft?

The point of my project was to try something new. The Amazon had been explored by kayak, hydrospeed, canoe, raft, boat and everything else you can imagine. But no one had ever done it in a 3-kilo inflatable boat.

We used the packrafts to explore, and we were able to really get to know their strength, maneuverability, comfort, etc. We mostly used the packrafts to venture into the jungle or on mini-expeditions, tour cities or travel from one town to the next.

What kind of packraft did you use on the Amazon River?

We used an MRS Kaweskar, (Microraft) provided by Packraft.cl. It only weighs 3.4 kilos, takes up very little space in a backpack and is known to be extremely resistant.

What other gear did you take along with you or wish you had taken?

I think we had just the right kind of things for this type of adventure. Whatever else we needed, we purchased along the way, such as hammocks, mosquito nets and repellent. I would add a water filter or water purification tablets as essential on this trip as we had to buy our drinking water in bottles as the weather is very hot and you need to stay well hydrated.

What experiences stand out to you from your trip?

Sharing the packraft with children from the indigenous tribes. They use wooden canoes every day that are quite similar to the packrafts, but they really loved the inflatable boats.

I also loved paddling through the flooded jungle in some places where we saw a lot of the wildlife. One day we went to an island with a lot of monkeys, and they climbed into the boats to play. It’s crazy because monkeys don’t like water or swimming, so when they climbed onto the packrafts, they would stay there until they could find land or a tree to climb.

Also, when we were navigating through the jungle, we saw pink dolphins and fish for piranhas from the packrafts. Something that I recommend 100% as long as you take the necessary precautionary measures.

If someone else wanted to make the same trip, what advice would you give them?

They should take an [exploratory] trip like ours to realize what they will be facing fully. To undertake a solo packraft trip down the Amazon is a huge claim; it would take months of paddling, and there will be several dangers that you should really look into and know how you will deal with before heading out.

What adventures are you preparing for next?

Five months ago, I became a father to a beautiful baby girl called Luna. Now, I don’t have as much time and my projects are a little shorter and less extreme.

But in the next few days, I will go down the Maipo river from the city of Santiago to the sea, a distance of about 130 kilometres that I estimate will take about 3-4 days.

Another trip coming up is through Patagonia, and a significant project I have in mind is to travel from the north to the south of Chile along the Andes mountain range. The fun thing is that half of that trip would be hiking and mountaineering, while the other half would be packrafting.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Yes, it is really important to fulfill your dreams. Go on those trips that you have in mind, train, study, and packraft responsibly. It is such a fun way to travel, and it is important to educate yourself about it. But the most important thing is that regardless of the level of difficulty of our outings, it is important to enjoy them to the fullest and pack our garbage back out so that we leave places as we found them and the next packrafters can enjoy being there in the pure wilderness, as untouched as possible.

Know, value and protect.

Thank you very much!

Thank you so much Sergio for sharing your unique stories with us and inspiriting us to pursue our dreams. We wish you all the best in your next ventures.
