Adventure Racing World Series Race: Raid the Rockies 2024

We are delighted to interview Nathalie Long today, organizer of the recent Raid the Rockies event in Alberta.

Congratulations on the recent Raid the Rockies 2024 race! We were there and experienced the excitement firsthand. Can you describe what the race consisted of for our readers?

The race was a four-day stage adventure race in the stunning Abraham Lake, AB, area. Teams of two, three, and four biked, trekked, and paddled through over 280 km of this breathtaking landscape, using maps and compasses to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint.

We also had them doing some canyoning and via Ferrata on the first day. Racers were out between 10 to 16 hours every day and a half day on the last day.

How many teams came, and where were they from?

We had 24 registered teams from all over the world. About half were Canadians, the other half Americans and one team was from Australia.

What were the top three teams and in your opinion, what made them successful?

The winners were Bend Racing (the Canadian team). They have been doing really well lately. Between nailing the navigation and their speed, they dominated really quickly. Second place was Bend Racing 4h Fuel, followed a few hours later by the Expedition Canada team. The Jackalope team was sitting in second place overall until the last couple of hours of the race when they decided not to pick up the two Cps around them, pushing them to fourth place overall.

I think experience travelling in the mountains, as well as their overall navigation skills and fitness, were the main factors giving those teams the podium.

You had several local partnerships with local tourism and other businesses. Can you describe them briefly for any readers interested in exploring the area?

If you are in the Abraham Lake area, you will want to do a helicopter tour with Rockies Heli Company, which offers breathtaking aerial views of the Rockies. You will also want to try the awesome via Ferrata with Girth Hitch Guiding Company, a thrilling rock climbing experience. And be sure to take advantage of canyoning with the Banff Canyoning Company, an adventure through the rugged canyons.

You will want to visit Nordegg, do some adventure tours with Nordegg Adventures, and try out the delicious Miners Cafe, too.

If you need a car, go a little further and visit Edward's garage in Rocky Mountain House.

What were some of the highlights of the race?

The canyoning and via Ferrata were definitely pluses for the teams, offering unique challenges and stunning views. However, the hike on day 3 was the highlight for many teams. The beautiful views all around and the challenging elevation made it a memorable experience for everyone.

What were some of the challenges?

There were several challenges that the teams had to overcome during the race. The significant elevation gain over the four days was physically demanding. Navigation was also a big challenge, as the teams had to navigate through the big mountains using maps and compasses. The glacier-fed rivers and creeks added another layer of complexity, as the teams had to carefully plan their crossings.

What would you do differently next time?

We may have the start and finish of each day at the same central location to give the teams more time to sleep.

How does it feel to be the event organizer for something like this?

It is a role that comes with its share of stress, but the sense of accomplishment is truly rewarding. I personally test all the courses before the race, and seeing all the teams finish and hearing their high praise for the race is a significant reward.

Is there anything else you would like to mention about Raid the Rockies 2024?

The race was a big success, and we are so thankful for all the teams that came and enjoyed it. Our media team, AW Media, was on point, covering the race so well.

We were fortunate to be able to give away some of the best beers and non-alcoholic beers from Bow River Brewing, some of the best packs and jackets on the market thanks to USWE packs, a couple of pumps and bow bags from MRS and Camping Hiking Adventures, and nice buffs from Buff Canada, Fjall Raven clothing.

What are your plans for next year?

We are working on a Raid the Rockies 2025 again at the end of June. We will be announcing the dates and location soon!
