Raised in a hunting family, Michael’s passion for the outdoors started young and was shaped by years of small-game and deer hunting before reigniting later in life through remote mountain pursuits. That passion peaked when Michael beat 0.11% odds to draw a once-in-a-lifetime Alberta mountain goat tag—an opportunity that demanded fast planning and creative problem-solving.

Facing extreme remoteness and foot-only access, Michael turned to packrafting to reach deeper terrain and safely float meat out. The hunt was successful within days, but the most intense moment came during the swollen river exit, where fast water and tight decisions turned the packraft into both a lifeline and a test of skill.

The experience reinforced a simple truth: preparation, adaptability, and respect for the wild matter more than perfect gear—and sometimes the best stories begin where others say a plan won’t work.

Over the years, MRS has developed a variety of spraydecks. Choosing the type  of spraydeck will depend on your context and how you will be using your packraft.  C Deck This is the standard deck that comes with the Microraft, Microraft XL and the Adventure X2. It has velcro on one side and a zipper on the other. The advantage is that the velcro makes it quick and easy to get in and out. The disadvantage is that the velcro is not fully waterproof. The C deck comes with an inflatable area in front of the paddler that is intended...

Do you have any advice for people who might be interested in getting involved in adventure racing?

My only regret when it comes to adventure racing is that I waited too long to start. For a long time, I thought that running or cycling for such a long time was impossible.

All you have to do is try! Most races are modular. In other words, you don't have to complete all the checkpoints. Most races are designed to offer a challenge for all levels of fitness. If in doubt, ask the organizers. There are more and more short-format races that offer a good introduction to the sport.

For your first race, keep a simple game plan and plan the estimated time for each section, cutting checkpoints if necessary to avoid arriving late. Keep a good margin for manoeuvre, especially towards the end of the race, as your progress will probably be slower than expected. Bring a variety of food that you've tested beforehand. The same goes for equipment: nothing new on race day.

Adventure races forge memories and friendships like no other. There will be difficult moments, of course, but you'll always come away with something positive.

We often joke that adventure racing is a vacation for busy people. You'll experience so many incredible things in such a short time!
