Packrafts

MRS packrafts have become our number one best-selling item, and it’s easy to see why. They are fantastic on so many levels: quality of material, lightweight, easy to assemble and pack up, great warranty and FUN! Our family loves spending time exploring mountain lakes and canals near our home around the Rocky Mountains. While we have not personally gone through any rapids yet, lots of our customers have, and they love MRS packrafts for whitewater.

If you aren’t familiar with packrafting, one of the newer sports in North America, it can seem like these boats are too good to be true! They fit into a backpack (no more carrying around a big bulky canoe or kayak, thank you) and are surprisingly easy to inflate with the screw-on airbag where you “catch” air and compress it into the boat. After about ten scoops of air from the airbag, the vessel is 90% inflated. A few more puffs from your mouth or an optional (not-included) pump, and your raft is buoyant and ready to go. Another surprising feature of these beauties is how sturdy they actually are. When people first see them, they think that they are going to rip easily, but they are actually very strong. And in the improbable event of damage to the material, MRS offers a three-year warranty. Our good friend had his stuck in an underwater cave for months, and even after that crazy adventure, he was able to use his MRS packraft.

Material

The material is hand-made from high-quality urethane-coated nylon, (not PVC or hypalon like other cheaper boats on the market). This material is light, abrasion-resistant, UV tolerant, non-ageing and maintains flexibility at low temperatures.  It has been specially treated to make a smooth, scratch-resistant surface. This creates a supple material for easy packing and folding. It is also very easy to repair in the unlikely event that the packraft should need a patch.

MRS fully supports sustainable development and is deeply involved in the research and development of TPU coated fabric. The TPU fabric in the MRS packrafts are all Swiss Bluesign®-certified, meaning that they are environmental-friendly and manufactured in a safe workspace.

Distinctive Features

The Nomad S1 series is great for speed because of its streamlined shape and longer waterline. It is the fastest single person packraft that we carry. This is the new and improved model after the designers responded to customer feedback on the previous model. The narrow hull reduces water resistance and also lets you paddle the packraft with less effort. The detachable skeg reduces water resistance and increases the overall stability when you want to do so. This reduces lateral swing and increases the speed of the vessel. Although it has a narrow hull, it is specially equipped with a high seat cushion so that you will not be squeezed between the tubes. You will have plenty of space as you sit on the high-set seat.

This particular model works best on still water, and it's excellent for exploring lakes and fishing. You could also easily take the Nomad down a river with no rapids. If you think you might be paddling in a lot of rivers, you will want to order the spraydeck to keep you dry.

The Nomad S1 opens up a whole new realm of hiking possibilities and adventures for you to explore. It is one of the lightest of the packrafts we carry, making it a perfect option for backpacking. Many people love the Nomad Series for it's sturdy, reliable feel.

The Nomad S1 series comes with optional internal storage system (ISS), where the stern of the boat can be accessed with a water-resistant zipper, and the side tubes can be stuffed with more storage. This actually proves to be an advantage in handling the boat and does not affect buoyancy. However, once you open the zip, the craft deflates, so you will want to be strategic about what you store in the side tubes. Using a dry bag will make it easy to access your gear from the side tube.

Nomad S1 Series Options Include: Internal storage system (ISS), Inflatable foot rest, thigh straps and a spray deck (type-D).

Fantastic. The boat assembled smoothly (there are a few vids online that help), and impressive how quick it inflates with the bag. It handled well in my first run in fast water with a few rapids. Can't wait to take it on an expedition. Elizabeth was so helpful - from deciding what to buy, to questions I had afterward. Note, my boat, with deck/seat/internal bags/inflation bag/skeg is more like 13lb. Rather heavy for a packraft, but you do get a lot for it. Its more like a kayak-packraft hybrid, which is what I wanted.

Would be nice to have had a formal location for viewing/trial of packrafts as we are interested in possibly buying a second one. Elizabeth & Rob work hard to show you all the models and their features.

Five stars was an easy choice! I’m very happy with my MRS Nomad S1D and the service from Camping Hiking Adventures. Elizabeth was very helpful on the phone, answering all my questions and there was no sales pressure. I placed my order. It arrived right on time. The Nomad is well designed and assembled with care. I was looking for something bigger than my ultralight pack dinghy for lake travel. It also needed to be packable so I can trek / bushwhack into some remote lakes where the carry is too difficult for a canoe portage. I've paddled the S1D it in moderate wind and small chop and it feels very secure. I’m surprised how well it tracks. The removable skeg is probably the reason for that. The spray deck and skirt kept me warm and dry in gusty winds even with cold water blowing off my paddle and the tops of small waves. I feel safe in the Nomad and it will be packable enough for me. I consider the extra weight well worth the better speed, tracking, and safe feel of the Nomad on a lake. The ISS (internal storage system) is a great option, and the two dry bags are spacious. I also ordered the deck bag to store things during the day because the internal storage is not accessible without deflating. Hip width is the main constraint. I take a 32” belt and I am comfortable between the tubes, but people with wider hips can inflate the seat more and sit higher. I tried that and the Nomad still felt quite stable. I wondered if my frame-style pack would fit under the spray deck. It does. Just barely, but it does. I posted pics of my empty Osprey Exos 58 stored behind the seat. There's still room above and below the pack for a few things. (I wear water shoes while using the Nomad and put my hiking boots under the pack.) I hope this info helps you decide if the S1D is for you. As you can see, I am 100% happy with mine. Happy adventures!
